Lynn Tilton, the founder of Patriarch Partners, shared that her life changed when she followed her intuition, which came to her in a dream where her late father advised her, “This is not what I had in mind for you.” This intuition led her to dedicate her career to helping others and saving struggling companies, ultimately becoming the owner of the largest woman-owned business in America.

Research supports the idea that intuition is a valuable tool in decision-making. Staff Sergeant Martin Ritchburg's intuition saved 17 lives in Iraq when he acted on a hunch about a potential threat. The U.S. military is even exploring intuition and offering training programs to develop it further.

Marine Corps officer Maurice “Chipp” Naylon discussed how the Marine Corps trains soldiers to trust their gut feelings, particularly in situations where hyperawareness is crucial for survival. Similarly, Neuroscientist Joseph Mikels highlighted the importance of emotional or gut feelings in decision-making, especially in complex situations.

In another example, trader Kushal's intuition saved his life on 9/11 when he followed his gut feeling to run from the Twin Towers moments before they collapsed. Mikels' research emphasizes that intuition can lead to better decisions, particularly for older adults whose cognitive abilities may decline with age.

Lynn Tilton emphasized the importance of balancing intuition with intellect, stating, “Intuition without intellect is like buying a plane without any propulsion.” She highlighted the need to analyze situations while also trusting one's intuition. Similarly, Mikels advised consulting and considering intuition along with other information when making decisions.

To strengthen intuition, experts recommend practices such as meditation, spending time in nature, taking breaks from devices, and focusing on breathing. These activities can help individuals access alpha-wave moments where intuitive thoughts are more likely to arise.

In conclusion, the use of intuition in decision-making, as demonstrated by leaders like Lynn Tilton and individuals in critical situations, can lead to positive outcomes. By balancing intuition with intellect and training oneself to access intuitive thoughts, individuals can make better decisions, particularly in complex or high-pressure situations.
