The Yale Institute of Sacred Music (ISM) is marking its 50th anniversary with a series of celebratory events from April 26 to May 5. Established fifty years ago through a generous gift from the Irwin-Sweeney-Miller Foundation of Columbus, Indiana, the ISM has grown from humble beginnings to a vibrant international community.
According to the ISM, the institute initially started with "one administrator, three faculty, and ten students." Today, it boasts "well over a hundred faculty, students, and fellows" who come together from diverse backgrounds to explore the ways in which people manifest their faith through worship, music, and artistic expression.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, there will be various events open to the public. These include a Festal Evensong featuring the newly formed Yale Consort, a performance of the Bach B Minor Mass conducted by David Hill with Yale Schola Cantorum and Juilliard415, and the closing event titled "All Creation Sings." This final event will be an ecumenical hymn festival featuring a community choir of 300 voices and guest preachers, the Rev. Dr. Barbara Brown Taylor and the Rev. Dr. James Forbes.
In a statement, the ISM extended its best wishes, saying, "Happy 50th anniversary to the Yale Institute of Sacred Music!"
The celebrations aim to highlight the growth and impact of the ISM over the past five decades, showcasing its commitment to exploring and fostering expressions of faith through music, worship, and the arts.
